About
Ben Bauman started Bauman Orchards in 1929. It began with 20 acres, where the house and storage building now are, and a 10-acre apple orchard, which was originally planted in the 1900s. As the business grew, an additional 50 acres were purchased. In 1942, 50 acres were planted with apple trees.
In 1961, Ben Bauman's son, Marion, purchased the business. Various plantings of dwarf and semi-dwarf trees were made over the years extending our offerings with peaches, plums, and sweet corn.
A partnership was forming with sons Doug coming into the business in 1987 as sales manager, joined by Bill in 1990 as orchard manager. Their added experience and enthusiasm for the family business brought growth and expansion of the orchard. In 1991, an additional cold storage building was built which holds 17,000 bushels of apples. This allows us to offer apples to our customers for a longer season.
As of 2003, the total acreage, in Rittman, is 117 acres. We have increased our apples trees to 20,000 spanning 25 different varieties. Our peach trees number 3,000, with at least 15 varieties; including white peaches and our most popular, Red Haven. See our orchard page for more information about our fruit orchard.
