About
Big Woods Farm is in its 18th season of providing freshly-picked, naturally-grown produce to our CSA members in the Twin Cities and in Rice County, Minn. Our 79-acre farm is located one hour south of Minneapolis, near the maple-basswood forest of Big Woods State Park and the farm fields of Nerstrand, MN.
As organic farmers, we grow our produce under the premise that we feed the soil, and the soil feed the plants. A healthy soil grows healthy food and sustains a myriad of life. We use no herbicides, synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, nor genetically-modified organisms.
Three festivals are held each year -Planting Day in May, the Mid-Summer Festival in August and the Fall Harvest in September (your 18th basket of the season is taken home from the Fall Harvest Festival). Members are not required to work, but we hope you can visit at least once during the season.
Beginning in mid- June, members receive a weekly half-bushel (12-30 lbs) of freshly-picked, organically-grown produce. A share provides vegetables for an average family of four (two adults and two kids) -we encourage single members to split shares with other single adults or couples. In addition, members are welcome to pick extra produce (when available) and flowers from the cutting garden when visiting the farm. Farming by it's nature depends on the weather, however we draw on our 20+ years of growing vegetables to bring forth a bountiful harvest.
