About
Rebecca's Garden is a small organic operation that has been in business at the same address in Howard County since 1979. Originally, before Maryland had an organic program and before the NOP, I sent notarized statements to the MDA telling them that I was growing fruits and vegetables using organic practices that I had learned in California. California's grocery stores had organic produce sections since 1969, which is the first year I began growing commercially and organically. I grow niche items – a lot of heirloom and specialty fruit and vegetable crops that places our offerings a cut above the average grower's offerings. And since we have a small operation, all our produce is well cared for and beautiful. We use no sprays or controls other than hand-picking of insects, and we practice on-farm composting and crop rotation to keep our soil healthy to deter insects and disease. To me, organic growing is a concept that I've lived with since I was a child, as my father and grandfather both grew crops using organic practices. I'm just carrying on the tradition – and I offer that produce to stores and restaurants in my area.
