About
For a long time owning a winery was just a dream, until the day we found the piece of land that we knew could be the home of a very special wine. We were driving up a peaceful, winding road in a small valley in northern California, 1,250 feet above the main valley floor and sheltered by stony, majestic hills. As we gazed at the cloudless azure sky and the softly rolling hills laced with grapevines, it felt as though we were in another world. We knew this was where our dreams of winemaking were going to be made a reality.
That day, we sensed two powerful forces at work: heaven and the earth. 'Astrale e Terra' is Italian for 'heaven and earth,' and with our interest in astronomy and archaeology, the name's inspiration seemed only natural. We look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor of love with you!
Our vineyard is located in the Atlas Peak appellation, which gives it an interesting "terroir." Terroir refers to all the elements of a growing area that contribute to the quality of the grapes. With an elevation of 2,683 feet, Atlas Peak is the most prominent feature of the region's viticultural area. The soil of Atlas Peak is predominantly volcanic in origin, and its climate is very distinctive, perhaps even unique in northern California. Although it is only 40 miles from the Pacific Ocean and is subject to afternoon and evening cooling (characteristic of maritime influence), the area is free from the fogs that are drawn up into the rest of the Napa Valley. And because the area is characterized by shallow volcanic soils and large areas of volcanic rock, it experiences radiant cooling. This means that late afternoon temperatures can drop as much as 30 degrees in two hours, with daily minimum temperatures that are usually lower than those in nearby Stags Leap, Yountville or Napa.
When all of these elements come together in an optimum year, the result is dramatic...a great wine!
