Historic Veblen Farm is an interesting blend of old and new. As the Thorstein Veblen Farmstead National Historic Landmark, near Nerstrand, Minnesota, it's an important cultural site acknowledging the accomplishments of the world-renowned economist, author and social critic Thorstein Veblen, who spent his childhood on the farm. Veblen is best known for his book The Theory of the Leisure Class, written in 1899, in which he coined the expression "conspicuous consumption". The farm is also frequently referred to as the Thomas and Kari Veblen Farmstead in recognition of how this farm and their family's story exemplify the immigrant experience in the early years of Minnesota's statehood.
